When Haggai and Zechariah prophesied, Zerubbabel and Jeshua got up and resumed building the temple. How did God’s word empower them? In Ezra 5:5, “the eye of their God was on the elders of the Jews,” so they did not stop the work despite threats. What does it mean that God is watching over us? What does it look like to be more aware of God’s eye than people’s? In situations where you feel afraid or intimidated, how can you apply your faith that God watches over you (cf. 2 Chron 16:9a)?

Governor Tattenai’s letter (Ezra 5:6–17) actually resulted in King Darius giving full support—a great reversal (Ezra 6:1–12). The Bible is filled with such reversals, from the Exodus to the return from Babylon, and ultimately the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus. Why is the gospel the ultimate reversal in our lives? Share an area in your life where you’re facing challenges and pray together with expectation for God’s reversal.
